Thomas Berra (Desio, 1986) compie i suoi primi importanti studi artistici presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera a Milano. Da sempre affezionato al medium pittorico, l’artista inizia a operare in età giovanile, avendo dapprima la possibilità di applicare sulla tela diverse sperimentazioni tecniche e di soggetto.
Nella produzione attuale di Berra è possibile notare una dichiarata ossessione verso il colore, nello specifico il verde, insieme a una rinnovata attenzione nei confronti dell’elemento vegetale. Abbandonando velleità iperrealistiche, l’artista sembra essere spinto da un desiderio di essenzialità delle forme e dalle infinite sfumature e tonalità del verde, a cui viene lasciato un ruolo di strumento “immersivo” dello sguardo verso ambientazioni atemporali e oniriche.
Attento studioso della tradizione quanto della contemporaneità, Berra attinge a un vasto abecedario di suggestioni. Molteplici sono, infatti, i riferimenti alla storia dell’arte, alla filosofia e alla letteratura, fattore riconoscibile sia dai titoli scelti, che nella composizione stessa delle opere. Esempio esplicito di questa inclinazione citazionista si ritrova nell’ultima produzione dell’artista, in cui diverse sono le opere raccolte sotto il titolo simbolico “Elogio delle vagabonde”, riferimento diretto al libro del grande paesaggista e filosofo francese Gilles Clément.
Da sempre molto attivo nel panorama artistico contemporaneo, Thomas Berra ha partecipato a importanti residenze dentro e fuori l’Italia, tra cui recentemente: Fondazione Pastificio Cerere a Roma (2017), Schafhof – European Center for Art Upper Bavaria in Germania (2017). Mentre tra le ultime mostre da ricordare vi è l’intervento site-specific di wall painting presso lo Spazio Leonardo Assicurazioni di Milano, organizzato da UNA Gallery; la personale “Verde Indagine” presentata presso la Galleria Placentia (Piacenza, 2017); la personale allestita presso Villa Vertua Masolo, “Dopo il diluvio” (Nova Milanese, 2017).

Thomas Berra (Desio, 1986) accomplished his first important artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, in Milan. The artist has always been fascinated by the pictorial medium and he started working at an early age, having first the possibility of applying on the canvas different experiments regarding the techniques and the subjects represented. In Berra’s actual artistic production, the declared obsession for the colour, green in particular, together with a renovated attention towards nature, are explicit. Having abandoned hyperrealistic ambitions, the artist seems to be driven by a desire for the essentiality of forms and the infinite shades of green, to which he attributes the role of an “immersive” instrument of the gaze, towards timeless and dreamlike settings. Focused on an attentive study of tradition as much as contemporaneity, Berra draws on a vast array of suggestions. Indeed, there are multiple references to art history, philosophy and literature in his works, the latter recognizable both in the chosen titles and in the composition of the works themselves. A clear example can be found in the artist’s last production, in which the works are collected under the symbolic title “Elogio delle Vagabonde” (“Praise of the Wanderers”), a direct reference to the book by the great French landscape designer and philosopher Gilles Clément. Among the last exhibitions to be mentioned there are the site specific intervention of wall painting at the Spazio Leonardo Assicurazioni in Milan, organized by UNA Gallery, “Verde Indagine” presented at the Placentia Gallery (Piacenza, 2017) and “Dopo il Diluvio” at the Villa Vertua Masolo (Nova Milanese, 2017).
