TO BE OR NOT TO BE

Facciamo finta di non sapere chi sia Brad Pitt. Supponiamo di vedere il suo bel volto per la prima volta sulla copertina dell’ ultimo Style (novembre 2011). Mettiamo che, dopo averlo visto, ci chiedano di stilare una classifica dei 10 uomini più belli del mondo. Se lo chiedessero a me, non lo metterei tra i primi dieci e neppure nei primi 30. A meno che tagliasse i capelli, si curasse la barba (o la togliesse del tutto) e fosse vestito diversamente da come appare in questa foto: il confine tra comfort è sciatteria è dannatamente labile. Brad ha superato i 30 da un bel pò, età limite per sedurre con lo stratagemma del bello e dannato; e a niente ormai serve il vecchio trucco di posare tirando su la fronte con la mano per attenuare le rughe e alzare la palpebra che dopo i 35 comincia la sua biologica discesa gravitazionale. E’ ufficiale: Brad si è omologato alla folta schiera degli inutilmente sciatti. Un po’ per colpa della moda che da anni illude che si può sembrare più giovani vestendosi da giovani: credetemi, non è così.  Il casual, salvo per alcune “eccellenze” come Polo Ralph Lauren o Closed, è consigliato ai minori di 30. L’immagine bohémien di Delon ne “La prima notte di quiete”, o Brando ne “Ultimo tango a Parigi” ha un fascino nei primi anni ’70, quando furono girate le due pellicole: la trascuratezza amplificava il tormento di due uomini in un’ epoca in cui l’ immaginario maschile era ancora profondamente legato alla virilità. Era una vera e propria provocazione. Stephen Dorff, icona assoluta già l’indomani dell’uscita di “Somewhere”, è sulla stessa china dei suoi predecessori; con 40 anni di ritardo, però. In parole molto povere: succede di confondere operai di cantiere con star del cinema, e viceversa. Datevi una regolata.

Let’s pretend we don’t know who Brad Pitt is. Let’s suppose we are now looking at his face for the very first time on the cover of the last Style Magazine issue (November 2011). Let’s say we are being asked to compile a list of the Top 10 Handsome Men in the World. If you ask me, I wouldn’t include him in the Top 10, or in the Top 30 either. Unless of course, he gets a haircut, trims his beard (or shaves it all off) and wears a different outfit from the one he has in this picture: the border between comfort and dowdiness it’s so damn ephemeral. Brad is not 30 anymore, which is the deadline to play the handsome and the damned, just to impress women. The old trick of pulling your forehead back trying to hide wrinkles and lifting the eyelid with your hand no longer works, because once you’re 35 gravity takes control. It’s official: Brad, decided to join the parlous crew of the pointlessly slobbish. Fashion is, in part, responsible for that, making men believe they could actually seem younger by just wearing a youthful outfit. You must be told, this is a lie. Certain casual wear, even if beautifully designed, as Polo Ralph Lauren or the one by Closed, is only suitable for the under 30. Alain Delon’s and Marlon Brando’s bohemian-shabby look in ”Indian Summer” and ”Last Tango in Paris” made much more sense in the early 70s.The provocative aspect was the scruffiness of those two main troubled characters, since the masculine figure back in the day was strictly associated with virility. In sum: they were transgressive. ”Somewhere” leading actor Steven Dorff, has followed Delon’s and Brando’s example, just being 40 years late, in this slovenly looking crowd that doesn’t surprise anyone anymore. Therefore, nowadays we might be confusing a construction worker for a movie star and vice versa. You should know when enough is enough.
